Florida Green Builder Coalition (FGBC)
The Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) is a nonprofit Florida corporation dedicated to improving the built environment. Their mission is “to provide a statewide green building program with environmental and economic benefits.”
FGBC is written for how we build in Florida. It is currently a one level certification. Points are received from 8 different categories (Energy, Water, Site, Lot, Health, Materials, Disaster Mitigation, and General). Total number of points required is 100. Achieving an Energy Star certification is not required.
You can access the FGBC Schedule A Home Standards Checklist and Reference Guide at www.floridagreenbuilding.org. Please note that the Checklist is not self explanatory. In order to understand each line item point requirement, please refer to the Reference Guide.
GETTING STARTED:
The FGBC green certification process begins with an initial consultation to review your project goals and select the appropriate items from the Checklist. Rough-in and final inspections are performed by the Certifying Agent. These inspections provide the opportunity for the Agent to review the Checklist with the builder, catch any items that may have been overlooked, and contribute to the documentation process. These are particularly important meetings when the home is one of the first green projects for the builder.
The documentation supporting the selected line items from the Checklist is collected by the builder and provided to the Certifying Agent for review. The Agent reviews the documentation and works with the builder to make any adjustments. The documentation is than sent to FSEC for third party review. IF FSEC has any questions or concerns and these items are successfully addressed, a Green Certification Certificate is issued.
The certification fee charged by FGBC per home is: Member of FGBC and FHBA $50.00; Member of FGBC or FHBA $75.00; Non Members $100.00.
